On 25 September 1976, following an extensive refit, the ship put to sea for the first time under the name Eye of the Wind. Five decades on, the brig marks this milestone with a special sailing voyage from and back to Kiel through the western Baltic. Six nights aboard one of the world’s best known traditional sailing ships, amid the golden light of the northern autumn, make this a rare experience under historic rigging.
You set off from the mooring at Tiessenkai in Kiel-Holtenau into the sailing grounds of the western Baltic. Along the eastern shore of the fjord the naval memorial at Laboe comes into view before the ship reaches the open sea off the Kiel lighthouse. A likely destination for the day is the Baltic fjord of Schlei, whose well known green and white lighthouse marks the entrance to this narrow arm of the sea. The picturesque fishing village of Maasholm and the harbour town of Kappeln both invite a relaxed walk ashore. Depending on wind and weather, the route may continue to the town harbour of Eckernförde with its welcoming waterfront promenade, on to Flensburg at the head of the fjord, or into the sheltered harbour of Sønderborg on the Danish island of Als, where a berth awaits for the night. Those who wish can lend a hand setting and stowing the sails, while others simply take in the voyage from deck, before the brig returns to Kiel to round off the week.
