A Serious Offshore Catamaran

The Lagoon 620 is a 18.9-metre offshore cruising catamaran produced by Lagoon Catamaran in France from 2009 to 2019, with design by VPLP – one of the leading naval architecture studios in multihull sailing. At ten metres beam and over 32 tonnes displacement, she occupies a different league from the typical charter catamaran: a vessel built to cross oceans comfortably, with the volume and stability to house a group of up to twelve guests for multi-week passages.

Voyages aboard the Lagoon 620 are operated as cabin-based sailing voyages with a professional crew. The scale of the boat – equivalent in deck space to many small gulets – allows a genuinely relaxed pace at sea: proper dining below, a flybridge for panoramic views underway, and a cockpit large enough for the whole group to gather in the evenings.

On Deck and Underway

The Lagoon 620’s flybridge is one of the vessel’s defining features: a raised helm and seating area above the saloon roof with unobstructed 360-degree views across the water. Sailing from there on a clear day – watching the two bows cut through the water fifteen metres below – is the kind of experience the Lagoon’s layout was designed to provide.

The aft cockpit offers a second gathering space at sea level, sheltered and close to the stern platform. Between flybridge and cockpit, there is always somewhere to sit in or out of the sun depending on conditions. The generous trampoline nets forward are the preferred position when running before the trade winds on a downwind passage.

Accommodation

The Lagoon 620 is available in 4-, 5- and 6-cabin layouts; voyages with ivent typically operate on the 5-cabin plan, accommodating ten to twelve guests. Each cabin is located in one of the two hulls and has private access, a double bed, and a dedicated head with shower – the full-length hulls of the 620 allow cabin dimensions that are notably more generous than those of smaller production catamarans.

The main saloon is reached from cockpit level and provides a full dining table, an L-shaped settee, navigation station, and a galley with four-burner hob, refrigerator, freezer, and double sink. Headroom throughout is 2.06 metres – no crouching below decks.

Passages and Destinations

The Lagoon 620’s twin 110 hp diesel engines and 1,376-litre fuel capacity support extended motor-sailing in calms; her mainsail of 146 square metres and jib of 91 square metres give her effective sailing performance in 12 knots and above. Waterline length of 18.2 metres produces a hull speed approaching 10 knots – a capable pace for passages between island groups.

Draft of 1.55 metres keeps most shallow anchorages accessible. The vessel operates in the Mediterranean and Caribbean, with a natural fit for the Aegean, the Ionian, and the Windward Islands – destinations where the combination of sailing distance, anchorage depth, and group size rewards exactly the vessel that the 620 is.

A Note on the Builder

Lagoon Catamaran, based in Bordeaux, is the world’s largest producer of cruising catamarans by volume, with a production history stretching back to 1984. The 620 was the yard’s flagship sailing model during its production run. VPLP Naval Architects – who also designed the IDEC and Groupama racing trimarans – drew the 620’s hull lines, bringing genuine offshore performance credentials to what is also an extremely comfortable cruising vessel.
