The Voyage

Nice (Villefranche) to Lisbon

Thirteen nights under white sails across the entire western Mediterranean and on to the Atlantic coast of the Iberian Peninsula. From Nice the Royal Clipper sails via the Balearics, the Spanish Mediterranean coast and through the Strait of Gibraltar to Lisbon. An exceptional Mediterranean-Atlantic route shifting continents from Europe to Africa and back.

Highlights of the route

  • Maó on Menorca, one of the largest natural harbours in the world, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve
  • Ibiza, with the old town of Dalt Vila as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and bays along the western coast
  • Málaga, birthplace of Picasso, with the Alcazaba fortress and harbour promenade
  • Playa Puerto Banús on the Costa del Sol, fashionable marina harbour
  • Gibraltar with the Rock and its Barbary apes, views across two continents
  • Tangier in Morocco, the gateway from Africa to Europe, the former international zone
  • Cádiz, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Europe (founded by the Phoenicians)
  • Portimão on the Algarve with the dramatic sandstone cliffs of Benagil
  • Lisbon on the Tagus, gateway to the Atlantic with the Belém Tower and the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos (UNESCO)

Life on board

The Royal Clipper, with five masts and 42 sails, is one of the largest fully rigged sailing ships in the world. Life aboard is sporty and unhurried: no dress code, open seating in the two-storey dining room, three pools including a glass-floor pool above the Captain Nemo Lounge. Guests are welcome to climb the rigging with the crew, take the helm beside the captain or enjoy the bowsprit net suspended above the water.

How the route could go:

Nice (Villefranche) Ajaccio (Corsica) Mahón Ibiza Motril Málaga Playa Puerto Banús Gibraltar Tangier Portimao Lisbon
11 of 12 ports located · approx. 1,160 nautical miles
  • Nice (Villefranche) · Embarkation

Nice offers the Cours Saleya with one of the finest flower markets in France and the Promenade des Anglais, where the Belle Époque feel is still tangible. Excursions reach Monaco in minutes, or the hilltop villages of the Côte d'Azur such as Eze and Gourdon.

  • Ajaccio (Corsica)

Ajaccio spreads around a wide bay on the west coast of Corsica and is regarded as the sunniest capital in France. Napoleon Bonaparte was born here in 1769; his birthplace and the cathedral where he was baptised shape the old town.

  • Mahón
  • Ibiza

Ibiza's old town Dalt Vila is a fully preserved Renaissance fortress on a hill and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. Beyond the nightlife, the island surprises with lavender fields, authentic fishing villages and the Ses Salines nature reserve with its flamingo-inhabited salt pans.

  • Motril

Motril lies on Spain's Costa Tropical between Malaga and Almeria and is one of Andalusia's most important ports. Behind the harbour stretch sugar cane fields, with views reaching as far as the Sierra Nevada.

  • Málaga

On the Costa del Sol in Andalusia on Spain's southern Mediterranean coast lies Málaga at the foot of the El Torcal mountains. Birthplace of Pablo Picasso, the city is today a major cultural hub with the Picasso Museum, the Moorish Alcazaba from the 11th century, the Roman theatre ruins and a lively harbour quarter around the Muelle Uno.

  • Playa Puerto Banús

Set in the Marbella suburb of Puerto Banús on Spain's Costa del Sol, this beach lies right beside Andalusia's most famous luxury marina. Mega-yachts, designer boutiques and the Sierra Blanca skyline form the backdrop to a glamorous beach scene.

  • Gibraltar

Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory at the foot of the striking limestone rock that guards the strait. The Barbary macaques (Europe's only wild monkey population), St Michael's stalactite cave and the view across to Africa 14 km away make Gibraltar unique.

  • Tangier

Tangier sits on the Strait of Gibraltar, where the Atlantic and the Mediterranean meet. The medina with its narrow lanes, the kasbah above the harbour and the unique play of light between two continents drew painters such as Henri Matisse here.

  • Cadiz

Cádiz is regarded as the longest continuously inhabited city in western Europe (founded by the Phoenicians around 1,100 BC). The "tacita de plata" (silver cup) lies on a peninsula in the Atlantic - golden La Caleta beach, old city walls and the largest cathedral in Andalusia.

  • Portimao

Portimão on the Algarve was a Phoenician settlement and is today one of Portugal's best-known sardine-grilling spots. Praia da Rocha, the spectacular cliffs of Ponta da Piedade in Lagos and the hinterland of cork oak forests define the region.

  • Lisbon · Disembarkation

Built on seven hills, Lisbon combines southern European joie de vivre with a great age of discovery. Vasco da Gama and other navigators set out into the unknown from the Belém Tower - yellow trams and melancholy fado still tell of that era.

The route of a sailing voyage may change without giving rise to mutual claims.
