Each year starts in late November, the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (ARC) in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. More than a hundred boats from around the world gather at this time in the Canaries, to cross in conjunction with other yachts of the Atlantic. Destination in the Caribbean is Rodney Bay in St.Lucia, one of the most beautiful islands in the Lesser Antilles.
For the 2,700 nautical miles, the yachts will need, depending on boat size and strength of the northeast trade winds between about 2-3 weeks.
An ARC can monohulls from 27 feet and cruising catamarans 27-60 feet in length with a minimum crew of two persons on board attend. Cruising in the groups that is allowed even engines, the results are calculated using a set of World Cruising handicap. In addition, there is a race group that starts under the IRC handicap and the sponsorship is allowed.
The ARC is a friendly competition for cruising sailors who want to cross the Atlantic in a safe community. The carrying of safety equipment such as liferaft, EPIRB, EPIRB and VHF marine radio is required. on a daily radio network, participants stay in touch.
The ARC has a special flavor because come together at this event rides and racers of all ages.
Entertainment is from tourist offices in Gran Canaria and St Lucia before the start and after the finish well taken care of.
