Cozumel is a flat coral-limestone island off the Yucatán Peninsula in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. The main town of San Miguel lies on the sheltered western coast, off which the Cozumel Reef forms part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef and ranks among the world's finest dive sites.

The port town of Puerto Limón on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica is surrounded by tropical rainforest and serves as a gateway to the canals of Tortuguero National Park. Banana plantations and Afro-Caribbean culture shape the region.

Colón sits at the Caribbean entrance of the Panama Canal. The canal - opened in 1914 and 80 kilometres long - is one of the great engineering wonders of humankind; 35 to 40 ships pass through it every day.

This 80-kilometre waterway crosses the Isthmus of Panama, joining Atlantic and Pacific via three lock systems and the artificially dammed Gatun Lake. One of the world's most spectacular feats of engineering, opened in 1914.

On Ecuador's Pacific coast in Manabí province, Manta is the second-largest port of the South American country and the main landing point for the tuna fleet. The long fishing beaches, the elevated lighthouse and the nearby Cabo San Lorenzo peninsula shape the cityscape on the open Pacific near the Equator.

Peru's main Pacific port, nine kilometres west of the capital Lima. The old Real Felipe fortress once guarded the Spanish crown's silver trade, and today the harbour is a hub for cargo and cruise traffic.
