From Rome the Star Clipper sets out to the Aeolian Islands with active Stromboli, on to Sicily, the Amalfi Coast and finally the small Pontine island of Ponza. Stromboli is one of the few permanently active volcanoes in the world. Glowing eruptions every 15 to 20 minutes turn the "Sciara del Fuoco" into a natural light show; the black sand beaches and the tiny village of San Vincenzo provide the contrast.
This Sicilian port lies on the strait of the same name separating Sicily from the Calabrian mainland. The astronomical clock on the cathedral's bell tower is among the largest and most intricate in the world, and the Museo Regionale holds two paintings by Caravaggio.
Amalfi lies at the foot of a sheer coastline regarded as one of the most beautiful in Europe. Excursions lead to the "Path of the Gods" (Sentiero degli Dei) with panoramic views over the gulf and coast, and to nearby Ravello with the gardens of Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone.
Sorrento looks out from a tufa cliff over the Bay of Naples, facing Vesuvius. Limoncello, lemon groves and the narrow pedestrian streets of the Centro Storico make it the most charming base for excursions to Pompeii, Capri and the Amalfi Coast.
Ponza is the largest of the Pontine Islands off the coast of Lazio. Turquoise grottoes, steep pumice cliffs and a small lively harbour village make it a hidden favourite of the Tyrrhenian yachting world.
