Bridgetown is the capital of Barbados and boasts one of the best-preserved colonial city centres in the Caribbean, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011. Barbados is regarded as the birthplace of Caribbean rum - a distillery tour is a must.
Mindelo on the island of São Vicente is the cultural capital of Cape Verde and birthplace of singer Cesária Évora. The Mardi Gras carnival, the music bars and the colonial townscape make Mindelo the most musical city in West Africa.
Las Palmas on Gran Canaria is, after Madrid and Barcelona, the most populous city in Spain. The long urban beach Las Canteras, the Vegueta Old Town with the Casa de Colón (where Christopher Columbus stayed in 1492) and the hinterland with the Maspalomas dunes define the island.
La Palma is known as the "Isla Bonita" of the Canaries and one of the greenest islands in the archipelago. Excursions lead to the Caldera de Taburiente National Park - a vast erosion-crater gorge with endemic forest - as well as to the Roque de los Muchachos observatory centre on the summit plateau.
Funchal, capital of Madeira, is surrounded by green hills laced with levada walking paths - small irrigation channels running through laurel and eucalyptus forests. Excursions to Monte include the famous wicker toboggan ride back down to town; Madeira-wine lodges and the Botanical Garden are also on the must-do list.
Some 40 kilometres north-east of Madeira in the Atlantic, this smaller Portuguese sister island offers an unusual treasure: a nine-kilometre stretch of unbroken golden sand. Christopher Columbus is said to have lived here from 1479.
Built on seven hills, Lisbon combines southern European joie de vivre with a great age of discovery. Vasco da Gama and other navigators set out into the unknown from the Belém Tower - yellow trams and melancholy fado still tell of that era.
