Dubai sits on the southern shore of the Persian Gulf in the United Arab Emirates. In a single generation the small pearling port grew into the UAE's largest city, with the 828-metre Burj Khalifa, the world's largest mall and the man-made Palm islands reclaimed off the coast.
In southern Oman on the Arabian Sea, Salalah turns unusually green during the summer khareef monsoon. Frankincense trees and ancient harbours recall the region's role in the incense trade.
Aqaba is Jordan's only seaport at the northern tip of the Red Sea in the Gulf of Aqaba. The city is the gateway to Petra, the Nabataean caravan city carved into rose-coloured rock in the 4th century BC.
On Egypt's Red Sea coast, Safaga is best known as the nearest port for the Nile valley with Luxor and the Valley of the Kings. The bay itself is renowned for coral reefs and windsurfing conditions.
Egypt's second-largest city was founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BC and was home to the famed ancient library. The modern Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the Qaitbay Citadel on the site of the former lighthouse and the Roman catacombs shape the cityscape.
Few arrivals set the tone for Greece quite like the approach into Piraeus, the maritime gateway to Athens since antiquity and today one of the largest passenger harbours in Europe. Above the city the Acropolis has stood for some 2,500 years, crowned by the Parthenon, which Pericles raised in the 5th century BC as the perfect temple of the Classical age.
