Few arrivals set the tone for Greece quite like the approach into Piraeus, the maritime gateway to Athens since antiquity and today one of the largest passenger harbours in Europe. Above the city the Acropolis has stood for some 2,500 years, crowned by the Parthenon, which Pericles raised in the 5th century BC as the perfect temple of the Classical age.
Santorini is one of the most dramatic islands in the world: white houses on the caldera edge, blue church domes and volcanic water a thousand metres deep in the former crater. Akrotiri, the "Pompeii of the Aegean", disappeared under volcanic ash in 1600 BC.
Paros combines Cycladic architecture with a relaxed atmosphere: the village of Naoussa with its Venetian harbour, the Byzantine Katapoliani church and crystal-clear water for swimming make Paros the most charming secondary destination in the Cyclades.
Milos owes its shape to its volcanic past, and the evidence is everywhere: at Sarakiniko, wind and water have polished the rock into a moon-white landscape unlike anywhere else in the Aegean. In 1820 a farmer here unearthed the Aphrodite of Milos, known the world over as the Venus de Milo and now in the Louvre.
Kusadasi on Turkey's Aegean coast is the gateway to the ancient city of Ephesus - one of the best-preserved ruined cities in the world, with the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The historic centre and the bazaar invite a leisurely wander.
Rhodes is the sun-island of Greek antiquity. The Old Town of Rhodes Town (UNESCO) with its Knights of St John buildings, the Lindos acropolis high above the Mediterranean and the Petaloudes butterfly valley make Rhodes the most historically layered island of the Aegean.
Mykonos is the most international of the Greek islands - whitewashed cube houses, blue domes, windmills and a nightlife that lasts until morning. Little Venice with its captains' balconies right above the sea is one of the most photographed scenes in Greece.
