Civitavecchia lies about 80 kilometres north-west of Rome and is the classic cruise gateway to the Eternal City. The harbour is guarded by the 16th-century Forte Michelangelo, completed to designs by Michelangelo.
The capital of Campania lies on its eponymous bay in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius and is the birthplace of pizza. The Centro Storico is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Pompeii, Herculaneum and the Amalfi Coast are all within easy reach of the harbour.
Trapani is the gateway for excursions to Segesta (a Doric temple from the 5th century BC set in remote uplands) and to the ruins of Selinunte. The Saline di Trapani - sprawling salt pans with historic windmills - form a unique landscape on Sicily's western shore.
La Goulette is the port of the Tunisian capital Tunis on the Gulf of Tunis. From here the ancient ruins of Carthage, the blue-and-white artists' village of Sidi Bou Saïd and the Tunis Medina are within easy reach.
Cagliari, capital of Sardinia, is crowned by its Pisan citadel overlooking the Molentargius lagoon. Excursions lead into the Gennargentu National Park, to the Nuragic complex of Su Nuraxi (UNESCO World Heritage) and to the white beaches of the Costa del Sud.
