Above the city the Acropolis has stood for some 2,500 years, crowned by the Parthenon, which Pericles raised in the 5th century BC as the perfect temple of the Classical age.
Santorini - properly Thira - sits on the rim of an extinct volcanic crater. The white houses of Fira and Oia with their blue domes, the breathtaking view into the caldera and the deep-black volcanic sand of its beaches make this one of the most iconic destinations in the Mediterranean.
Kusadasi on Turkey's Aegean coast is the gateway to the ancient city of Ephesus - one of the best-preserved ruined cities in the world, with the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The historic centre and the bazaar invite a leisurely wander.
Istanbul is the only city in the world that lies on two continents. Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Topkapı Palace and the Grand Bazaar concentrate more world history than any other city on the Bosphorus.
Volos lies on the Pagasetic Gulf at the foot of the legendary Mount Pelion in Thessaly. The Argonauts are said to have set sail from here, and today the lively port is a base for tours into the mountain villages.
Thessaloniki on the Thermaic Gulf of the Aegean is Greece's second-largest city and the capital of Macedonia. Byzantine churches, the White Tower and a rich Jewish heritage shape its streets.
Syros belongs to the Cyclades in the Greek Aegean and serves as the administrative seat of the archipelago. Its capital Ermoupoli charms visitors with neoclassical palazzos, marble piazzas and the Apollo Theatre.
Heraklion is the gateway to the Palace of Knossos - the largest Minoan palace complex in the world, dating from the 2nd millennium BC. The Heraklion Archaeological Museum holds the most important collection of Minoan art worldwide. Crete also boasts the Samaria Gorge, one of Europe's most impressive hiking trails.
