Ishigaki is the main island of the subtropical Yaeyama group in the far south-west of Japan. The turquoise Kabira Bay with its coral reefs, white-sand beaches and encounters with manta rays are among the island's highlights.
In the East China Sea lies Naha on the main island of Okinawa as capital of Japan's prefecture of the same name and a subtropical centre.
Shanghai is the most modern face of China: the Bund with its neoclassical colonial buildings and the Pudong skyline with the Oriental Pearl Tower are mirrored in the Huangpu River. The Old Town of Yuyuan (Yu Garden) and the French Concession offer contrasting historical insights.
Tianjin on the Bohai Gulf in northern China serves as the seaport for the capital Beijing, some 130 kilometres inland. Its historic concession quarters lend a European touch to this multi-million city.
On the Yellow Sea, around 30 kilometres west of Seoul, lies Incheon as South Korea's main seaport and the country's third-largest city. General MacArthur landed here in 1950 for the decisive turning point of the Korean War, and today the city impresses with the futuristic Songdo smart city district and one of Asia's largest airports.
