Yokohama is Japan's second-largest city and the port serving nearby Tokyo. The modern Minato Mirai waterfront, the country's largest Chinatown and historic brick warehouses define this cosmopolitan harbour city.
Osaka is the gateway to Nara (45 minutes) with free-roaming deer and the Todai-ji temple with the largest bronze Buddha in Japan, as well as to Kyoto. Osaka itself is Japan's kitchen capital - takoyaki, okonomiyaki and the Dotonbori canal form the liveliest food quarter in Japan.
Kochi on the Malabar Coast of southern India brings together Chinese fishing nets along the harbour, Portuguese colonial buildings in Fort Kochi, an old Jewish synagogue (1568) and Dutch canals. One of the most culturally layered port cities in the Indian Ocean.
Hiroshima is both a memorial and a modern metropolis. The Peace Memorial Museum, the Atomic Bomb Dome (UNESCO) and the sacred island of Miyajima opposite, with its floating torii gate, make Hiroshima the most culturally important port of western Japan.
Busan is South Korea's second-largest city and its most important port. Jagalchi Fish Market, the colourful Gamcheon district (Korea's "Machu Picchu") and the Beomeosa temple complex in the Geumjeongsan mountains showcase its maritime and Buddhist heritage.
In the west of Japan's Kyushu island, Sasebo lies in Nagasaki Prefecture on a rugged natural harbour. Offshore lie the roughly 200 islands of the Kujuku-shima archipelago, a popular excursion area.
Kagoshima is the capital of Kagoshima Prefecture in southern Kyushu. The active volcano Sakurajima across the bay smokes constantly and at times dusts the city with ash. The Senganen Gardens, the samurai tradition and the bold local cuisine define the cityscape.
Tokyo is the largest metropolitan area on Earth. Tsukiji market, the quiet Asakusa district with Senso-ji Temple, the pop worlds of Shibuya and Akihabara, plus the view from the Skytree (634 m) - Tokyo combines centuries-old tradition with a high-tech future.
