This small town on the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska sits on Kachemak Bay and is known for the Homer Spit, a narrow seven-kilometre tongue of land. It serves as a starting point for bear watching in Katmai National Park.
Hakodate sits at the southern tip of Japan's Hokkaido island and has a cosmopolitan atmosphere dating from its 19th-century opening as one of Japan's first international ports. The night view from Mount Hakodate and the morning fish market are famous.
On the Japanese northern island of Hokkaido, Muroran sits on a sheltered natural harbour at Uchiura Bay on the Pacific. The port town is known for its eight viewpoints around the peninsula with sea cliffs on the open ocean and for the white Hakuchō suspension bridge, which as Hokkaido's longest suspension bridge shapes the cityscape.
Miyako lies on the Sanriku coast in the north of Japan's main island of Honshu in Iwate Prefecture on the Pacific. The port town is famous for the nearby Jōdogahama beach with its white rhyolite rock formations, which look like a Buddhist paradise by the sea and gave the beach its name.
On the Pacific coast of Japan's Tohoku region, Sendai is the area's largest city and a gateway to Matsushima Bay. Its nickname City of Trees recalls the leafy avenues at its heart.
Tokyo is the largest metropolitan area on Earth. Tsukiji market, the quiet Asakusa district with Senso-ji Temple, the pop worlds of Shibuya and Akihabara, plus the view from the Skytree (634 m) - Tokyo combines centuries-old tradition with a high-tech future.
