Dakar is the westernmost capital of Africa, set on the Cap-Vert peninsula. The island of Gorée off the coast (UNESCO) recalls the darkest chapter of West African history as a slave-trading post; the African Renaissance Monument is the tallest statue in Africa.
Fogo ("fire") is the youngest of the inhabited Cape Verde islands and consists essentially of an active volcano (Pico do Fogo, 2,829 m). In the crater basin of Chã das Caldeiras the only vines in Africa grow on lava soil - producing a protected wine right beside the volcano.
On the southern coast of the mountainous Cape Verdean island of Santo Antão in the Atlantic, this port town serves as the ferry terminal to neighbouring São Vicente. Behind the village rise the island's spectacular mountain ranges with deep gorges and terraced fields reaching nearly 2,000 metres.
La Palma is known as the "Isla Bonita" of the Canaries and one of the greenest islands in the archipelago. Excursions lead to the Caldera de Taburiente National Park - a vast erosion-crater gorge with endemic forest - as well as to the Roque de los Muchachos observatory centre on the summit plateau.
This Basque port on Spain's Atlantic coast is renowned for its pintxos bars in the old town and the curved bay of La Concha. The city has one of the highest densities of Michelin stars per inhabitant in the world.
Funchal, capital of Madeira, is surrounded by green hills laced with levada walking paths - small irrigation channels running through laurel and eucalyptus forests. Excursions to Monte include the famous wicker toboggan ride back down to town; Madeira-wine lodges and the Botanical Garden are also on the must-do list.
Some 40 kilometres north-east of Madeira in the Atlantic, this smaller Portuguese sister island offers an unusual treasure: a nine-kilometre stretch of unbroken golden sand. Christopher Columbus is said to have lived here from 1479.
Agadir is Morocco's most important Atlantic tourism centre. Excursions head into the Souss-Massa National Park with its rare birdlife and argan-tree areas - the argan tree grows only in Morocco and produces the precious argan oil. The Atlas mountains and the Souss valley invite trips into the interior.
On Morocco's Atlantic coast, Safi rises around its old medina and a Portuguese fortress overlooking the harbour. The town is celebrated for its pottery workshops and sardine fisheries.
Built on seven hills, Lisbon blends a southern European sense of life with a great history of discovery. From the Tower of Belém, Vasco da Gama and other navigators set out into the unknown - yellow trams and the melancholic Fado still tell the tale today.
