Longyearbyen

Longyearbyen

Longyearbyen on Svalbard is the world's northernmost town with a permanent civilian population (78° N). The former coal-mining settlement is today the gateway to the Arctic - dog sledding, winter aurora, midnight sun in summer and the Svalbard Global Seed Vault.

Leg 2 · Mon, 14.06.

Svalbard Northern Region

Svalbard Reindeer, Ny-Alesund

Northern Svalbard is one of the last refuges of the polar bear - up to 3,000 of these animals live on the archipelago. Glacier ice dominates the coastal landscape; walruses rest on ice floes, humpback whales feed in the nutrient-rich Arctic waters. In summer there is 24-hour daylight.

Leg 3 · Fri, 18.06.

Svalbard Southern Region

Underwater Walrus, Svalbard, Norway

Southern Svalbard offers glaciers, Arctic tundra and wildlife sightings: reindeer, Arctic foxes and seabirds in colonies of millions (little auks) shape the scene. Historic whaling remains on the coast tell of the commercial opening of the Arctic.

Leg 4 · Sat, 19.06.

Bear Island

Bear Island (Bjørnøya) lies alone between mainland Norway and Svalbard and is protected as a nature reserve. Its steep southern cliffs hold vast seabird colonies, often wrapped in fog.

Leg 5 · Mon, 21.06.

Skarsvåg (Nordkapp)

Northern Lights Beach

On the Norwegian island of Magerøya close to the North Cape, Skarsvåg nestles in a sheltered cove. The village is regarded as the world's northernmost fishing village and lies just a few kilometres from the famous cliff plateau.

Leg 6 · Mon, 21.06.

North Cape

The North Cape on the island of Magerøya is regarded as the northernmost reachable point of the European mainland, where a cliff rising 307 metres towers over the Arctic Ocean. During the summer months the midnight sun never sets here.

Leg 7 · Tue, 22.06. · Disembarkation

Tromsø

Summer view of Tromso, Norway

Tromsø, the "Paris of the North", lies 350 km north of the Arctic Circle. The Arctic Cathedral, the midnight sun from May to July and intense aurora activity in winter make Tromsø the northernmost university city in the world.
