Southampton is England's largest cruise port, from which the Titanic set out on her maiden voyage in 1912. The SeaCity Museum commemorates this; the Old Town with remains of the city wall and nearby Stonehenge are classic day trips.
Honfleur at the mouth of the Seine is one of the most picturesque harbour towns in France. The narrow slate-clad houses around the Vieux Bassin, once home to the Impressionists Monet and Boudin, are among the most painted scenes in Normandy.
Saint-Malo is a fully walled corsair town in Brittany, from which bold privateers sailed in the 17th and 18th centuries. The city walls are walkable and offer panoramic views of Île du Grand Bé (Chateaubriand's burial place) and the tidal dynamics off the Mont-Saint-Michel headland. Bordeaux is the world's wine capital and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The neoclassical old town along the Garonne with Place de la Bourse and the Miroir d'Eau, the famous Médoc châteaux and the modern Cité du Vin make Bordeaux one of France's most elegant port cities.
Bilbao in the Basque Country is home to the Guggenheim Museum (Frank Gehry) - the building that coined the term "Bilbao effect". Pintxos bars in the old town, the funicular up Mount Artxanda and the nearby Costa Vasca shape the port.
Santander is the elegant capital of Cantabria on Spain's northern coast, with long sandy beaches and the striking Palacio de la Magdalena overlooking the bay. Tapas bars and Belle Epoque architecture shape the city centre.
In the northern Spanish region of Asturias, Gijón opens onto the Atlantic on the Bay of Biscay. Asturias's largest city features the Cimavilla old quarter on a peninsula, traditional cider bars and the Roman bath complex Termas de Campo Valdés from the 1st century.
Vigo sits on the Atlantic coast in north-western Spain in the region of Galicia, on the ria of the same name. The port city is Spain's most important fishing harbour and the starting point for the Cíes Islands in the Atlantic.
About five kilometres north-west of the centre of Porto lies Leixões as the main port of northern Portugal on the Atlantic. From the deepwater harbour visitors reach Porto's old town, the UNESCO-listed Ribeira with the Dom Luís I bridge by Téophile Seyrig and the famous port wine cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia on the southern bank of the Douro.
Built on seven hills, Lisbon blends a southern European sense of life with a great history of discovery. From the Tower of Belém, Vasco da Gama and other navigators set out into the unknown - yellow trams and the melancholic Fado still tell the tale today.
