The heart of Monaco combines luxury, elegance and history in the smallest of spaces: the famous Casino, the Grand Prix circuit through the streets, Jacques Cousteau's Oceanographic Museum and one of the most modern yacht harbours in the Mediterranean.

Saint-Tropez on the Côte d'Azur was made into a myth by Brigitte Bardot's film "Et Dieu créa la femme". Pastel-coloured houses around the old harbour, the market at Place des Lices and the famous Pampelonne and Tahiti beaches make the town a destination of longing.

Calvi on Corsica's north-west coast has been home to the French Foreign Legion since 1962. The 13th-century Genoese citadel towers over a perfect crescent of pine-fringed beach, and local legend even claims the town as the birthplace of Christopher Columbus.

On the Tuscan Tyrrhenian coast on a rocky promontory opposite the island of Elba, this port serves as the main ferry gateway to the Tuscan Archipelago. The medieval old town with its 13th-century castle gazes seawards from the Promontorio di Piombino.

On the Tyrrhenian Sea south of Naples, Salerno is the gateway to the Amalfi Coast with Positano, Amalfi and Ravello. The medieval Schola Medica Salernitana was Europe's first medical school, and the Arechi Castle offers panoramic views over the gulf.

Lipari is the largest of the Aeolian Islands and the administrative seat. The ancient acropolis with the Archaeological Museum (one of the finest in the Mediterranean) and the pumice quarries in the north, which colour the sea chalk-white, are highlights.

Taormina sits on a rocky spur above the Ionian Sea and is regarded as the loveliest spot in Sicily. The Greek-Roman theatre with Mount Etna in the background is one of the most spectacular ancient settings; ships moor at Giardini-Naxos at the foot of the hill.

Catania at the foot of Mount Etna is the gateway for excursions to Europe's highest active volcano (3,357 m). Guided Etna tours cross lava fields up to the craters; the city centre with the Elephant Fountain and the cathedral complex is itself baroque UNESCO World Heritage.
