In antiquity, Syracuse was one of the most powerful cities in the Mediterranean and the home of Archimedes. Its centre on the island of Ortygia - a cathedral built on Greek temple foundations, baroque squares and the Arethusa Fountain - has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005.

Taormina (Naxos)

Street view with cafe in old town Taormina. Sicily, Italy

Taormina sits on a rocky spur above the Ionian Sea and is regarded as the loveliest spot in Sicily. The Greek-Roman theatre with Mount Etna in the background is one of the most spectacular ancient settings; ships moor at Giardini-Naxos at the foot of the hill.

Leg 4 · Sat, 09.10.

Amalfi

Amalfi an der Amalfiküste

Amalfi lies at the foot of a sheer coastline regarded as one of the most beautiful in Europe. Excursions lead to the "Path of the Gods" (Sentiero degli Dei) with panoramic views over the gulf and coast, and to nearby Ravello with the gardens of Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone.

Leg 5 · Sun, 10.10.

Neapel: Blick über Stadt und Hafen zum Vesuv

The capital of Campania lies on its eponymous bay in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius and is the birthplace of pizza. The Centro Storico is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Pompeii, Herculaneum and the Amalfi Coast are all within easy reach of the harbour.

Leg 6 · Tue, 12.10.

Bastia

Ibiza Bucht

Bastia is the second-largest city of Corsica on the north-east coast of the French Mediterranean island, where it serves as the main ferry port for traffic to Italy and Marseille. The Terra Nova citadel with its ochre-coloured houses from the 15th century shapes the harbour skyline.

Leg 7 · Wed, 13.10.

Piombino

Klippen mit türkisfarbener Grotte im Mittelmeer

On the Tuscan Tyrrhenian coast on a rocky promontory opposite the island of Elba, this port serves as the main ferry gateway to the Tuscan Archipelago. The medieval old town with its 13th-century castle gazes seawards from the Promontorio di Piombino.

Leg 8 · Thu, 14.10.

Portoferraio

Elba Fetavaia

Portoferraio is the capital of Elba and lies in one of the best-protected natural harbours of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Elba is known as Napoleon's place of exile (1814-15), as a hiking island and for its crystal-clear waters along granite shores.

Leg 9 · Fri, 15.10.

Viareggio

Ruhige Ankerbucht mit Segelbooten im Mittelmeer

Viareggio sits on the Tuscan coast of Italy on the Tyrrhenian Sea, north of the marble mountains of Carrara. The seaside resort is famed for its exuberant carnival with giant papier-mâché floats and its kilometres-long Art Nouveau seafront promenade.
