Portoferraio is the capital of Elba and lies in one of the best-protected natural harbours of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Elba is known as Napoleon's place of exile (1814-15), as a hiking island and for its crystal-clear waters along granite shores.
Bastia is the second-largest city of Corsica on the north-east coast of the French Mediterranean island, where it serves as the main ferry port for traffic to Italy and Marseille. The Terra Nova citadel with its ochre-coloured houses from the 15th century shapes the harbour skyline.
Santa Manza Bay lies east of Bonifacio on the south-east coast of Corsica, a sheltered fjord-like inlet with crystal-clear water. The calm bay is a favoured anchorage for sailing yachts between the rocky beaches of the Bonifacio plateau.

Calvi on Corsica's north-west coast has been home to the French Foreign Legion since 1962. The 13th-century Genoese citadel towers over a perfect crescent of pine-fringed beach, and local legend even claims the town as the birthplace of Christopher Columbus.
Between Nice and the Italian border lies the city-state of Monaco on the French Mediterranean coast on the Ligurian Sea. The world's second-smallest country is famed for the Prince's Palace in Monaco-Ville, Charles Garnier's lavish Monte Carlo casino and the world-famous Formula 1 street circuit winding through its narrow lanes.
Nice offers the Cours Saleya with one of the finest flower markets in France and the Promenade des Anglais, where the Belle Époque feel is still tangible. Excursions reach Monaco in minutes, or the hilltop villages of the Côte d'Azur such as Eze and Gourdon.
