The west coast of Corsica is one of the most spectacular sailing grounds in the Mediterranean: red granite cliffs plunging sheer into the sea, deep gulfs and coves reachable only from the water. The route from Ajaccio runs along the Calanche into the Gulf of Porto with the roadless hamlet of Girolata, through the Scandola nature reserve to the citadel town of Calvi, and back via Cargèse and Sagone. Two UNESCO World Heritage sites lie along this coast, with anchorages beneath maquis-clad slopes in between.
